Monday October 12th is Indigenous Peoples Day. If you miss the parade, you likely missed the one for Leif Erikson on October 9th, which was also the anniversary of John Lennon’s birthday—but be patient, I will connect the dots.

Today, an emotionally skewed country celebrates the day in 1492, when Christopher Columbus discovered America. Most banks are closed in remembrance of his greatness. Closing banks is an irony to a “financial guy” like me because Chris kind of sucked as a CEO.

He made huge business blunders and did it all on borrowed money. In two earlier voyages, he bought ships that leaked so badly he had to rush back to port so they could be replaced. He also did some “Bernie Madoff Prison Time” for various schemes and moral lapses.

Yet his PR ability exceeded his other skills. Going from palace to palace across Europe, he pitched his “new world” concept. The idea itself wasn’t bad, it was his greed! He demanded, ten percent of whatever he found, an Admirals title, and a piece of all naval profits thereafter.

When he got to Queen Isabella, she didn’t think Columbus would sail off the edge of the earth. She thought he had underestimated the size of the globe and would run out of fresh water before reaching China. So, she signed the contract, thinking he would die anyway.

Then in August of 1492, Chris set sail from “Palos de Frontera” on the west coast of Spain. After a long journey he landed in the Bahamas, believing it was Japan and for hundreds of years, Americans have been celebrating a man who didn’t know where the hell he was going.

But boy, could Chris control the narrative. He eventually got out of jail to become rich and famous—even though, Leif Erikson, a Norse explorer actually discover America a half a century earlier. Of course, Leif didn’t have the same social media savvy and was only a historical footnote. But Leif’s dad, Erik the Red, was different story.

“Red” discovered a land so barren he named it Green-land to make it sound beautiful—like putting a bow around the neck of an ugly dog for some attention. It worked handsomely. People built huts all over Greenland and “Red” like Chis, became a celebrated man.

However, no matter who had the better public relations team, it was the Indigenous Peoples who got here first! Fourteen thousand years ago, during an ice age no less, they crossed the Bering Strait, beating both discoverers. That is where the American discovery story truly began.

From Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1492 to the Mayflower in 1620, some ninety percent of all Native Americans died from white man diseases in what is called the “great dying”. A genocide not only of Indigenous Peoples, but on the moral conscious of all mankind.

Another reason it’s so lonely at the top.

Keltner and Piff decided to tweak a game of Monopoly. (Quick aside: Monopoly was originally called “The Landlord’s Game,” and was invented as a teaching tool used to demonstrate the evils of concentrated ownership and the tendency of wealth to accumulate in the hands of the already-rich.) The psychologists rigged the game so that one player had huge advantages over the other from the get-go. They ran the study with over a hundred pairs of subjects, all of whom were brought into the lab where a coin was flipped to determine who’d be “rich” and “poor” in the game. The randomly chosen “rich” player started out with twice as much money, collected twice as much every time they went around the board, and got to roll two dice instead of one, so they moved twice as quickly.  Kevin Palmer Author

None of these advantages were hidden from the players. Both were well aware of how unfair the situation was. But still, the “winning” players quickly showed the tell-tale symptoms of Rich A$$hole Syndrome (RAS). They were far more likely to display dominant behaviors like smacking the board with their piece, loudly celebrating their superior skill, even eating more pretzels from a bowl positioned nearby. In Piff’s words, “The rich players actually started to become ruder toward the other person, less and less sensitive to the plight of those poor, poor players, and more and more demonstrative of their material success, more likely to showcase how well they’re doing.” Kevin Palmer

After 15 minutes, the experimenters asked the subjects to discuss their experience of playing the game. Amazingly, when the rich players talked about why they’d won, they focused on their brilliant strategies rather than the fact that the whole game was obviously rigged to make it nearly impossible for them to lose. “They talked about what they’d done to buy those different properties and earn their success in the game,” said Piff. “What we’ve been finding across dozens of studies and thousands of participants across this country is that as a person’s levels of wealth increase, their feelings of compassion and empathy go down, and their feelings of entitlement, of deservingness, and their ideology of self-interest increases.” Kevin Palmer Arizona

Earth Day April 22, 2020 Covid After Glow

On this reverent 50-year anniversary of Earth Day, the world is in the grip of its most widespread pandemic in history. Yet somehow, we still are in denial about our responsibility to care for this astonishing blue planet. As the most evolved creatures on it, what happens in our world is exclusively our doing. Outside of earthquakes or asteroids hurling from space, most of what happens, good or bad, is our doing and we need to pay more attention to mother nature.

There seems to be an enormous lack of accountability guarding us against consequences of risk, as we prefer to live in denial about environmental responsibility. Those myths we tell ourselves can damage relationships, put us in bankruptcy, and even end our lives. Perhaps it’s time to admit the human role and the glaring fact, that most of what happens on the earth, is our fault. If you look close enough, anything can be traced back to our provenance—even Covid19!

The earth is only 24,901 miles in circumference (est. using equatorial measurement). The population numbers some 7.8 billion. As usage stands now, there are not enough resources for all the people in the world to live at the level Americans take for granted. Yet everyone, and who is to say otherwise, wants the highest standard of living possible for their families —which puts mother earth in a bad predicament. Covid19 is a wake up call for all the worlds citizens to take responsibility for what happens here on earth.

Destroying forests and natural habitats at such a rate, has put our delicate ecosystem out of balance. It’s driven animals and unknown pathogens perilously into our lives. More people on earth means increased animal food, requiring industrial breeding, high tech slaughterhouses, storage and wet markets—all hot beds of disease. Making the earth itself, sicklier and unable to renew, as it has done for 4.543 billion years. The sun someday, will be a Red Giant engulfing our planet. So, let’s use the remaining time well.

As humans we need to start, by putting our own houses in order. If you eat too much without exercise, your body stores too much fat. With that, comes other sickness and necessities, which require expansive medical care. Viruses are a part of life but shouldn’t kill us unless there are extenuating health circumstances, which often come from deficient self-care. Protecting oneself from contamination can be simple—use your manners. Cover your mouth, take personal space, wash your hands. The next mass extinction shouldn’t come a social faux pas.

Economic health is equally important. Most people caught without the prescribed 3-months of financial safety net savings are now scrambling for help. One renter asked his landlord if he could make a request for reduced payments, saying, (actual quote) “I know this is a stressful time for everyone but it’s none of our fault(s).” Nobody’s fault? Wrong on two counts! First, he, a banker, should be better prepared for a family financial crisis. Second, Covid19 is everyone’s fault for reasons previously stated. The wake-up call here is, we all share moral hazard!

In the 1800’s thousands died of cholera. What caused it was poor sanitation during an industrial revolution that missed peripheral issues. What mitigated cholera was a sewer system catching up to industry. There are practical answers for stemming the spread of contagions. All we need to do is take a broader look and increase personal responsibility. By the end of the next century this planet could have 12 billion people. Resources to sustain that do not exist. So, let’s start cutting mother nature some slack by being better stewards!

Do your small part. Don’t waste, consume less, recycle more. During my time rescuing wildlife, I came home one night and said. “Why am I eating other mammals for dinner after saving them during the day?” That night I stopped eating meat. Now due to pathogenic viruses originating in animals, jumping to humans, and pressures on our ecosystem. I’m trying full Veganism. By looking closer at our evolved relationship with animals and the earth, we will foster a greater respect for both, and make the world better for everyone.

Until now, all so called “get rich experts” tout their own style of one-size-fits-all techniques. Their opinions are based on a single idea created through a personal filter, the very subjectivity of which decreases the odds of success for others.

The truth is, no single formula for obtaining financial prosperity works! The only “expert” capable of determining how to create wealth is the person themselves and that makes options for succeeding infinite!

In my new book, hundreds of personalities were examined. The conclusion; all people share external traits but what separate success and failure is an applied divine difference that link behaviors on an individual basis.

My new book, Reawakening an American Dream, illuminates behavioral thinking that paves a way to wealth, by unlocking personal power permitting individual outcomes to naturally unfold—retooling the mind for individual best use.

Because the brain is more disposed to learning patterns from personal experiences, this book was written with composite characters based on the most common classic personality types to frame each chapter.

Actual success techniques were woven into the stories, making change virtually effortless, in much the same way children learn new behaviors because they are cognitively predisposed.

Regard theme as anyone-can-do-it stories—from a study of a hitchhiker turned serial entrepreneur to a grandmother who made her fortune investing her cookie-jar money. You’ll find each of them enlightening, as they offer instruction that can open doors to your own riches.

In a public statement last summer, super rich hedge fund manager Leon Cooperman vowed to give away his entire fortune to charity. This remarkable trend called, The Giving Pledge, was created by Warren Buffett and caught the attention of not only Bill Gates but other mega wealthy individuals, who committed to give away half their wealth to philanthropic or charitable causes.

Recently this social responsibility has spread beyond the wealthiest 607 billionaires to an increasing numbers of the 18 million average millionaires. Feeling blessed by fruits of their labor these families devoted to closing the wealth gap, have committed to Warren Buffett’s idea. Perhaps to the chagrin of their children, who might have gotten rich by default—the race is on to share an estimated $30 trillion dollars that would have changed hands from Baby Boomers to GenXers and Millennials.

Pathocracy, according to Psychiatrist Andrew Lobaczewski, cultivates a right to dominate using personally beneficial solutions. Hardworking boomers are revolting against such politicians with unremarkable resumes making fortunes granting entitlements as options to poverty. Trusting that authority has given way to individuals donating their wealth on a massive scale at death.

In America where anyone can become rich, race and poor education are barriers to that dream for too many. Unlike children of millionaires who are exposed to the mechanics of capitalism, minorities are blocked by demographics to knowledge capital and connection capital. The giving pledge that provides funds to a broader swath beyond wealthy families bridges the gap to help people to help themselves.

Imagine if a mere 1% of the 30 trillion dollars earmarked to move from boomers, goes to independent charities unfettered by political gain or red tape, the direct benefit is $300 billion dollars to those who otherwise would have no economic advantage. It could send 12 million kids to universities who’d otherwise be stuck in a system that cycles abuse and poverty. A homegrown American idea that benefits everyone with unforetold jobs and business revenue.

Authors Note:

Props to Leon Cooperman who said: “When I took the Giving Pledge, I told Warren (Buffet), asking for half is not asking for enough. I intend to give it all away and I’m going to give it to those organizations, institutions and individuals that made a difference in my lifetime.”
