As temperatures around the country hit scorching highs, I try to remember it could be worse. Like in 1934 when much of the U.S. was trapped in a heat wave.
In Chicago temperatures soared above 100 degrees so it made sense for Polly Hamilton a divorced waitress, to take in an air-conditioned movie. She asked her boyfriend Jim Lawrence to go but he had almost died during plastic surgery a few months earlier. He refused and was content being alive and miserably hot.
So, Polly asked her landlady, Anna Sage to convince Jim to come along. It worked so well Ms. Sage decided to invited herself. As it turned out, Anna Sage knew more about Jim than she let on—she knew that Polly’s boyfriend had his nose fixed and a few warts removed so he no longer would look like John Dillinger Public Enemy #!
Anna Sage an illegal from Romania, was threatened with deportation a year earlier for having run a house of ill repute. What John Dillinger didn’t know about Sage, was she hoped to plea bargain her deportation, using deal with the FBI to turn in Dillinger.
The reasons Dillinger agreed to see the movie “Manhattan Melodrama”, at all on that day was not to see movie star, Clark Gable, go to the electric chair in the end, but to see the female lead, Myrna Loy, who was the femme fatale of the day. In spite of being surrounded by seductive woman who ultimately bring disaster.
That night as temperatures cooled the 8:30 showing let out and behind the Biograph Theater the Feds waited. In true political puffery there were 16 gunmen and some reporters. Dillinger astutely spotted the fanfare, pulled a gun, and ran down the alley.
He never even got off a shot and was hit three times. Two in the chest and one in the back of the neck. Polly Hamilton later became known as the “Lady in Red”. Anna Sage, despite her underhanded scheming was eventually deported.
So, no matter how hot it gets this week. Stay cool and always watch you back.
