From the outset of Carl Jung’s early theories, much work in behavioral science has been done to classify people into psychological personality types. As my own research continued, we saw success practices exhibited in all standard classifications and it became increasingly apparent that any normal personality type can succeed. It also became clear that, developing skills based on one’s own personality makes synthesizing success habits much easier.

To initiate such learning patterns in the brain, I created composite characters from major personality types and interlaced the associated skills into stories so anyone can apply them, simply by being themselves, to gain what they want. Additionally, there are actionable success techniques sprinkled throughout, to make learning virtually effortless.

Netflix’s Tepid Results

Netflix report earnings this week with tepid results.

Critics are calling the streaming service “topped out”, despite its hock stick performance over the past 5 years. To me it sounds like a sour grapes spin from old school broadcast losers who are scrambling to find their own steaming solutions.

The old boy theory from Nielsen is that too many choices can overwhelm consumers and create the unpleasant feelings. In behavioral psychology we call that “decision fatigue” and can sometimes lead to shut down and impede purchase potential.

The question to ask is what demographic chooses old broadcast television when there’s too much video streaming content! If that was a valid business argument other streaming competitors like Hulu, Disney (DIS), CBS (CBS) and Amazon wouldn’t be working so hard to displace Netflix.

Chappaquiddick Island

In 64 A.D. an emperor named Nero fiddled while Rome burned.

It was on the same day 2033 before a senator drove his car off of a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island. Both incidents involved politicians but one was a habitual murderer. The fiddle would not be invented for over a thousand years after the fire raged in a South West slum in Rome. So, Nero who was in charge may not have fiddled but as empire decided to blame a new group called the Christian and undertook one of many non-Jewish holocaust, slaughtering men, woman and children so he could remain in political favor.

This was no nice guy. History shows he may have poisoned his stepfather Claudius, murdered his stepbrother, Britannicus, a year later. Then killed his mother, Agrippina, before taking-out his wife, Octavia. However he kept the masses happy with diversions, like killing Christians and other outdoor activities. His real mistake however was raising taxes.

To fix that political mistake he committed suicide.

Fast Market with a Broad Global Sell Off

I wanted to share my response to a friend’s email on Friday, August 22, 2015.

Usually I don’t log in on weekends but yesterday was quite an event. It will be more interesting to see Monday’s activity to the better answer your question.

Friday was a fast market with a broad global sell off. When the morning started we were at the 6 month lows but it was the smallest of the 623 midyear lows since 1928. (Sunday I’ll re-calc the numbers based on Friday’s close). My point is that it is not unusual to have a painful adjustment of prices that measure economic circumstances. What remains to be seen is if this is a pause in a bull market or the beginning of a secular trend down. I’m betting on the former. Monday we could see more selling all day which will flush out the rest of the bull (a good thing) or see a bounce off the bottom into plus territory all day (which would mean we need to go south like this again) or we could see a strong bounce in to plus territory that closes with a deep sell off by day end (pray we don’t).

So based on that, to answer your question, a reduction in appetite for debt offerings at a potential firm will come from a major change in attention and focus by scenario number three. However that might likely be short lived because there are other factors unique to the U.S. economy that would preclude that distraction for too long (but let’s talk Monday if you want on those details).

The only thing I would be concerned with right now is political risk. Ahead of the election there are many proposals being floated about the student loan problem and firms will use that as a reason to wait on a decision –and I’m afraid that is a valid and normal protocol.

In our case I’m guess it is more than likely we can find an underwriter with a big vision and bigger balls.

Asp Exit Strategy

One of the most famous queens in history ended a string of “Merger and Acquisition” deals by using the asp. Her name was Cleopatra. She was of Greek heritage and as a teenager married her brother (old dynastic custom). However, bickering over whom ‘mom liked best’ led to civil war in Egyptian. At a nearby asset heavy monopoly, Julius Caesar decided to seize the political opportunity and take over Egypt. But the due-diligence of his astute investment bankers was disrupted by Cleo’s eyelash ploy.

Having over payed or not, he was receiving personal benefits that made it work to his advantage—until he felt a stabbing sensation in the forum (I mean the back). Filling the BOD power vacuum were three upwardly mobile directors. One named Mark Antony, also quickly fell victim to Cleopatra’s classic eyelash operation. Again it worked for a while until the other two guys Lepidus and Octavian, realized even a well-run deal machine can be thrown off kilter by emotion and figured Queenie had too much influence over Marky.

Then on this day, September 2nd in 31 B.C., a game-changing analyst report hit. Mr. Antony had lost the naval Battle at Actium. Cleo who assumed she could fix a fundamental business problem with a management change, new Octavian was the new deal maker on the block and she should make him an offer. But what to do about the ousted Mark Antony?

Cleo decided to send a text to Mark saying, ‘Market and cultural landscapes have shifted and I’ve taken the poison pill. Advise you do same if you really love me.’ Mark Antony being a naïve junior partner when it came to girls, complied. Cleo soon sent another message to Octavian saying ‘boyfriend’s gone you’re in!’

Octavian being less interested in finer female things said, ‘not a chance baby because you will be marched through the Walled Streets of Rome as my ROI disaster.’ Knowing her gig was up, Cleo performed the above mentioned unassisted suicide by pressing an asp to her bosom, ending her illustrious career.

Business take away: It’s always critical to cover your own asp.

Suspended Arizona pension boss should lose that outrageous $43,000 pay raise

Opinion: The financially troubled Public Safety Personnel Retirement System is awfully generous with other people’s money.

The state’s pension fund for public safety workers may be one of the nation’s worst when it comes to performance. But when it comes to generosity, there is, apparently, none better.

The Republic’s Craig Harris reports that the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System board in November voted to give Administrator Jared Smout a $43,147 raise, to $252,000 a year.

Then the board made the raise retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018.

Smout is now on paid administrative leave – no doubt enjoying his 20 percent raise as the board investigates a staffer’s complaint of unfair treatment.

Possibly unconstitutional? Who cares?

Oh, please oh please, let my next job be at PSPRS …

… Where not even a warning that it may be breaking the law deters these guys from opening the pension fund’s wallet and doling out raises.

On April 17, the Arizona Department of Administration warned the PSPRS board that Smout’s retroactive raise may constitute an unconstitutional $43,147 gift of public money and ordered the pension board to stop doling out raises.

So, naturally, the board on Tuesday doled out a $39,500 raise to Bret Parke, the PSPRS assistant director/general counsel who is now serving as interim director.

How will they justify his raise?

PSPRS board members justified Smout’s 20 percent raise as his first since 2015. I’m sure rank-and-file state employees – who generally have enjoyed pay raises closer to 2 to 3 percent in that same time period – feel his considerable pain.

Board members justified Parke’s 21 percent raise as a result of his expanded duties in Smout’s absence.

No word on how they justify not bothering to consult with the Department of Administration before giving out raises – something state law compels them to do.

“This is something we will have to work with them on,” the always diplomatic DOA spokeswoman Megan Rose told Harris.

Here’s a better idea: Take the cash back

Here’s an idea for how to work with PSPRS board members on that: tell them to take the money back.

Tell them a $43k raise — applied retroactively for up to a year — is not only an unconstitutional gift. It is an outrage.

This $10.2 billion pension fund – fueled by taxpayers and contributions from police and firefighters – was rated the third-worst performing government trust fund during the 10-year period ending in 2015, according to a 2017 report by the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Below-average investment returns, combined with high fees and generous payouts to retirees, have left the trust with no where near the money it needs to pay its current and future obligations to its 60,000 members.

That has forced cities to drain their budgets to cover the shortfall, leaving some close to bankruptcy and others cutting basic services.

And Smout, who for years has served in key leadership roles at PSPRS, just snagged a 20 percent pay raise?
