A United Nations committee has voted to list prehistoric ruins near the ancient city of Jericho in the occupied West Bank as a World Heritage Site in Palestine.

The decision, which has been criticized by Israel, was made at a meeting of the UN World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Sunday under the auspices of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.

The listing refers to the Tell es-Sultan archaeological site nearby, which contains prehistoric ruins dating back to the ninth millennium BC and is outside the ancient city itself.

“A permanent settlement had emerged here by the 9th to 8th millennium BC due to the fertile soil of the oasis and easy access to water,” UNESCO said on its website.

Tell es-Sultan, an oval-shaped mound, contains evidence of one of humanity’s first-known villages and an important Bronze-Age town dating back to 2,600 BC.

It is around 2km (1.2 miles) from the remains of the first city of Jericho, which contains ruins of importance to Jewish history, including a synagogue dating back to the first century BC.

Jericho is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities on Earth, and is in a part of the Israeli-occupied West Bank that is administered by the internationally recognised Palestinian Authority.

Israel criticizes decision

Israel’s foreign ministry released a statement Sunday denouncing the decision, calling it a “cynical ploy”.

“The foreign ministry considers today’s decision another sign of the cynical use the Palestinians are making of UNESCO and the organization’s politicization,” the statement said.

“Israel will act with its many friends in the organization to change the flawed decisions made.”

Israel quit the UN organization in 2019 over accusations that it fosters an anti-Israel bias, but did send a delegation to this year’s meeting in Saudi Arabia.

The influence of language alone can hardly explain the shift from a participatory to a non-participatory world. If human discourse is experienced by indigenous, oral peoples to be participant with the speech of birds, of wolves, and even of the wind, how could it ever have become severed from the vaster life? How could we ever have become so deaf to these other voices that nonhuman nature now seems to stand mute and dumb, devoid of any meaning besides that which we choose to give it?

If our own language is truly dependent upon the existence of others, nonhuman voices, why do we now experience language as an exclusively human property or possession? These two questions are in fact the same query asked from two different angles. Nonhuman nature seems to have withdrawn from both our speaking and our senses. What event could have precipitated this double withdrawal, constricting our ways of speaking even as it muffled our ears and set a veil before our eyes?

In a few centuries of European settlement, much of the native abundance of this continent has been lost – its broad animal populations decimated, its many voiced forests overcoat and its prairies overgrazed, Irish rich soils depleted, its tumble clear waters now undrinkable.

Some historians and philosophers have concluded that the Jewish and Christian traditions, with their other worldly God are primarily responsible for civilization’s negligent attitude toward the environing earthy.  Each of these two ancient cultures seems to have sown the seeds of our contemporary estrangement – one seeming to establish the spiritual or religious ascendancy of humankind over nature, the other effecting a more philosophical or rational dissociation of the human intellect from the organic world.

Writing, like human language, is engendered not only within the human community but between the human community and the animate landscape, born of the interplay and contact between the human and the more than human world. Archaeological evidence suggests that for more than a million years the subsistence of humankind has depended upon the acuity of such hunters, upon their ability to read the traces a bit of scat here, a broken twig there of these animal Others. These letters I print across the page, the scratches and scrawls you now focus upon trailing off across the white surface, are hardly different from the footprints of prey left in the snow.

Do not go gentle into that good night

Dylan Thomas – 1914-1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

$14 trillion of reparations for slavery

KEY POINTS
  • “Now is the time to go big” to keep America from dividing into two separate and unequal societies, Robert Johnson said in a CNBC interview Monday.
  • Johnson said reparations would send the signal that white Americans acknowledge “damages that are owed” for the unequal playing field created by slavery and the decades since.
  • The wealth divide and police brutality against blacks are at the heart of protests that have erupted across the nation following last week’s killing of George Floyd during an arrest in Minneapolis.

For Harvey Weinstein Magnetism can’t be Bought

Sexual harassment allegations of Harvey Weinstein represent everything that’s wrong with masculine perceptions of power in Hollywood—and dare I say some men! As father, husband, and business partner of dynamic women I’m enraged! Julia Boorstin’s description of The Weinstein Company co-owner as “…gross and offensive…” makes my skin crawl when thinking of my daughter or nieces facing such repulsive conduct when aspiring to achieve. During my time in media production I met men like him but never supposed that such behaviors still occurred. Sadly for Harvey Weinstein animal magnetism can never be bought or fabricated. But personality, grace, and charm can always win in its place. Time to end casting couch mentality and advance human dignity through self-empowerment.
