Looking for a place to do yoga on Long Island two years ago was like work. When I’m on the road finding studios to practice yoga was not much different than finding good surf spots in my younger days. But two years ago, when it came to yoga, Long Island seemed to be as studio stunted, as the summer surf.

However this year was a down right surprise! There were not enough days in the week for me to explore new places to put my mat. The other extraordinary discovery was how many surfers are doing yoga and a bigger surprise is, how many are woman. Even Gilgo Beach, one of my favorite break spots has sunset yoga on the bay-side. A perfect end to a day in the waves—if I was still surfing.

When I first gave up surfing there remained a need in me that being on a board in a wave provided. It was not only a beautiful sport—the dynamic of being in the immense majestic ocean, as a humble visitor, gave me perspective on how I viewed and lived life.

I still had that need to be connected to a community of people like I did with surfers, who for over 3 decades were the primary humans I related to. The longest of any peer group in my life.

Surfing didn’t end for me just one day after a ride, it took time. I was like an alcoholic moving through sobriety every day. Bending at the knees became painful and it took longer to stand up, so good rides were getting few and far between. Eventually I gave into my knees and gave out to Yoga.

Yoga started for me much like surfing did in 7th grade. I was awkward and intimidated  but in Yoga unlike surfing, I was a minority! There were not a lot of woman surfers and now realized what it was like for those few brave female soul to paddle out with the big boy dogs.

At first, I didn’t like being a minority to stronger more poised woman—until I realized that it was my ego talking. Without fail, the community in every yoga studio had a friendly noncompetitive vibe. Plus no one ever talked about what wave you miss yesterday. Instead it was about today!

After doing Asanas on my mat, I slowly found it was like surfing because you need balance and agility. Beyond the sporting aspects there are other subtleties as well. The mat was my board and I was singularly alone and could practice as I liked. Then, when I’m done the mat gets washed down like my old surfboard, ready for the next outing.

When traveling I can drop-in at any yoga studio in the country to do yoga like when I visited a new beach, except nobody says, “you should have been hear yesterday it was perfect.” The reason is because in Yoga the present is as it should be –perfect!

Yoga may not be as exhilarating as when I’d catch my first wave of the day but there are no serious faux pas either, like dropping-in on another surfer’s wave. What is most appealing though, is no day is exactly the same. Every location or any individual class, is like a new wave. All of them are unique and spiritually beautiful.

These days I walk into a yoga class knowing it will be different and that I will take out more then I put in! And now when traveling I look for yoga studios like I did beaches, hoping for new experiences that improve, enhance, and bless my life.
