However, referring to it as merely a “next phase” is an understatement.  New and exciting applications are bringing profound advancements in deep learning, artificial intelligence and “ambient awareness”. The way we do business and interact with each other today will be virtually unrecognizable to many in 5-10 years.

In current development, 5G is reaching speeds that are twenty times faster than 4G LTE. 4G LTE has a peak speed of 1GB per second; 5G is able to achieve speeds of 20GB per second. And, 5G can handle 100x the capacity of traffic (5G should be able to support 1 million connected devices per square kilometer) with less power usage on your device.

The future of 5G may be driverless cars, wireless VR gaming, remote control robots, virtual reality, smart cities (imagine completely wireless connections anywhere you are, with speeds that are unbelievably fast), and many other applications for the technology yet to emerge.

For individuals, the promise of 5G brings enhancements to your life, with higher productivity, less time waiting for buffering, loading, etc.  Imagine downloading entire 4k movies in seconds, streaming in 4k with no lag time or pixilating, streaming music flawlessly, getting real time directions on a trip with real time updates along the route – just to name a few.

MIT reported 5G could open $12.3 trillion in revenue across a number of industries.   When speeds increase anywhere from ten to 100 times over 4G—and, and reliability skyrockets as well—what might that mean to live streaming? content? Social? Real-time analytics? Graphics capabilities in immersive tech?

Who are some of the players?

Apple (AAPL) is reportedly not going to release a 5G capable iPhone until 2020, but expect to see several 5G Android phones released this year.

Netgear (NTGR) has the first wireless home router that will use AT&T’s 5G network to give your entire home 5G network capablities, enabling you to “cut the cord” with traditional internet connectivity, and be truly wireless.

Skyworks (SWKS) is a leader in signal sending and receiving.

Semtech (SMTC) is also a leader in signal sending and receiving, geolocation and beamforming (Beamforming sends a single focused signal to each and every user in the cell), wearables, and IoT.

Qualcomm (QCOM) is a leader in cellular phone semiconductors with its snapdragon chip, and it holds 15 percent of all 5G patents.

Ericsson (ERIC) is working with Volvo to create 5G connected vehicles.

Samsung is leading with its wireless phones and networks.
